Yesterday, Microsoft Offers Free Vista SP1 Support

Microsoft occasionally releases service packs for its Windows operating systems to fix problems and add features. Microsoft offers free support for Vista SP1 for 1 year. Microsoft will offer its partners free phone support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Two areas have seen changes in Service Pack 1 that have come as the result of concerns from software vendors. One of these is desktop search users will be able to change the default desktop search program to one provided by a third party instead of the Microsoft desktop search program that comes with Windows Vista, and desktop search programs will be able to seamlessly tie in their services into the operating system. These changes come in part due to complaints from Google, whose Google Desktop Search application was hindered by the presence of Vista’s built-in desktop search.
Brandon LeBlanc, a spokesperson for the Windows Vista team, says all users with PCs running Vista are eligible for free support.
Offering free support to customers downloading service packs is standard procedure for Microsoft, a spokesperson for the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant said in an email.
Microsoft, however, has done little to broadcast news of the free SP1 support. The home page for the Windows Vista Solution Center, the operating system’s help and support starting point, makes no mention of it, nor does Microsoft’s main Windows Vista SP1 site.
